A subsidiary of Electricité de France Group since 1st September 2005, RTE is responsible for the management of France's electricity transport network that it operates, maintains and develops. RTE's network, Europe's biggest with 100,000 km of high and very high tension lines and 44 cross-border lines, has an advantageous central geographic location and is making a determinant contribution to the development of a Europe's electricity public service market. RTE must ensure the efficient operation and safety of the French electrical system, and assure universal, equitable access for electricity consumers. Its turnover was €4.03bn in 2004. It employs 8,300 people. |
The need
RTE already had an information site for its agents, but this proved difficult to adapt to an increasingly rich content base. Its functional obsolescence made developments impossible at reasonable cost.
In 2003, RTE launched an invitation to tender for a platform to create Internet sites and provide a content management solution, its objective being to create a site for each of its 18 units. In short, it needed a veritable "website factory" to automate all the processes involved in building sites!
Ultimately the RTE portal would need to host several tens of institutional sites specifically adapted to each unit, plus a dozen businesses sites for activities such as procurement, legal affairs and human resources.
The solution
The Jalios JCMS solution was chosen for its ease of implementation and above all its ease of use by RTE agents who have little knowledge of Internet technologies.
The project manager, Mr. Heeramun, explains: "The project involved three stages: first the creation of a site-building platform with Jalios and a pilot site, then migration of existing sites and finally the construction of new sites."
As expected, JCMS proved to be easy to configure for creating new sites. Future developments will require few specialized in-house skills.
Mr. Heeramun adds: "We are proud of the success of this project and we now envisage to upgrade our platform to a high-availability architecture, once again with the support of Jalios."
